Welcome, Class of 2019!
Having each new class of Fellows arrive in September is like waiting for your favorite holiday, the birth of a child, or a vacation you have been planning and anticipating for almost a year. But more than the anticipation of the start of the program is the realization that the Lord ordained and provided each and every aspect of the program. From the first time a college student hears about the program, during the admissions process and the decision to be a Memphis Fellow, the Lord has done it all. Through the provision of host families, mentors, and work placements, the Lord has opened and closed doors while caring about each detail however large or small.
We want Fellows to come to Memphis and fall in love with our broken city and to want to effect change here or wherever they ultimately live. However, the true purpose of the Fellows is to glorify God. We reflect Him in the way we wait for His provisions, work in our internships, serve others in our community, and steward the gifts He has graciously provided.
We want our Fellows to graduate from the program having been challenged and grown spiritually, physically, and emotionally; but more than anything, we want them to be more in love with our Father. They will have the privilege to be part of a rich community of believers both in their Fellows class but also in the larger community of believers at Second Presbyterian Church. Yes, we are broken people and will love imperfectly but we will hope and strive to spur each other on to deeper faith, greater dependence, and to sharpen each other in the process.
To the Class of 2019, there are many people eagerly waiting for your arrival. They know you from your bios but can't wait to truly get to know and love you! They can’t wait to discover Memphis with you, take you to get some BBQ, donuts, or to their favorite coffee shops. They want to worship with you and learn from you as you learn through the program. They have prayed for you since before you applied to the program and will look forward to now praying together with you. Welcome to Memphis! We are thrilled you are here!
Equipping future leaders since 2005
We are the Memphis Fellows Program at Second Presbyterian Church. What is a Fellow and what is the Fellows Program?
A Fellows Program is an intensely practical nine-month spiritual and vocational leadership program that prepares you to live a seamless life of faith. The program includes a part-time job in your field of interest, biblical coursework, bible study, mentoring, and service. All of this takes place in community with the other Fellows in your class. By participating in a Fellows Program, you will discern how your story fits into God's story. You will start your post-college years with a strong foundation for a cohesive life of faith—a full life that seamlessly weaves together your career, your personal life, and your place in God's story. You'll begin to answer some of life's most important questions: As a person who follows Christ, how do you think about work, culture, friendships and experiences?
We begin our year with an opening retreat allowing a time for our community to begin to form and develop. During the fall we get to know Memphis by touring and volunteering as we cultivate a love of the city and the people. We attend a regional Micah 6:8 Justice Conference in November. Our spring includes a silent and prayer retreat, Nashville Trip with all Tennessee Fellows programs, Mission Memphis, women and men's retreat, attending the Fellows Initiative National Conference in Washington, a cultural tour of Washington immersing ourselves in what we have learned in the classroom, and our closure retreat.
